Common Questions About Domain Renewal

Updated Time:2025-06-02  Views:172

After a domain is registered, its usage period is generally about one year. If a domain is about to expire and you wish to continue using it, you’ll need to renew it in time. So, how do you renew a domain on this site, and what common issues might you encounter? Here are the details:

1. How to Renew a Domain?

Go to Management Center > Domain Management > Renew Domain, enter the domain name you wish to renew, select the number of years you’d like to renew it for, and submit the renewal. After submitting, please monitor the renewal status promptly to ensure the domain is successfully renewed on time.

2. How Long Does Domain Renewal Take?

Domain renewal generally happens in two ways: Direct Renewal and Renewal via Registrar Transfer.

(1) If the domain's registrar is already our platform’s registrar, the system will submit the renewal request directly. This typically completes within about 10 minutes.

(2) If the domain is registered with a different registrar, the system will first initiate a transfer from the original registrar to ours. Once the transfer is completed, the renewal will also be completed. This process usually takes around 1 to 7 days.

3. What Are the Different Domain Renewal Statuses?

(1) Waiting for Renewal: The domain is less than 60 days old and therefore cannot yet be renewed via registrar transfer. The system has not submitted the renewal request. Once the domain reaches 60 days, the system will process it automatically. You can still cancel the renewal while it's in this status.

(2) Renewal Successful: The domain has been successfully renewed.

(3) Renewal Failed: The renewal could not be completed due to special circumstances. Assistance from a support representative is required.

(4) In Transfer: The domain is currently undergoing a registrar transfer as part of the renewal process.

(5) Renewing: The domain is in the process of being renewed directly.

4. How Long Is the Domain Renewal Grace Period?

After a domain expires, each registrar may offer a grace period during which the domain can still be renewed. This period can range from 0 to 30 days, depending on the registrar’s policies.

5. Can I Still Renew a Domain After It Expires?

Yes. You can still renew your domain within 15 days after expiration. If you miss this window, the domain may enter a high-cost redemption period, where fees are significantly higher. Some registrars may delete the domain immediately upon expiration, so it's best to renew before it expires to avoid unnecessary loss.

6. How Many Years Can I Renew a Domain For?

According to registry regulations, the maximum renewal period for a domain is 10 years from the current expiration date.

7. What Does “Lost Renewal Year” Mean?

If a domain expires on its original platform but is renewed during the grace period, and then transferred to a new registrar within 60 days of that renewal, you may experience a “lost renewal year.” This means: even though a renewal and a transfer were completed, the expiration date only extends by 1 year instead of 2. This happens because the registry removes the renewal year that was added at the original registrar after the domain is transferred.
